Ryan Schomburg Awarded Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship to Study Abroad

Ryan Schomburg, a University of Houston Chinese studies major and global business minor from Houston, has been awarded a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad during the spring 2014 semester. Schomburg will study in Chengdu, China.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is a national scholarship program to assist students with limited financial means in studying abroad. The program is open to undergraduate students who are planning to study abroad and are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding.

Recipients may receive up to $5,000 to spend at least four weeks in a study abroad program of their choice. They can also receive an additional $3,000 if they are taking a critical need language course while abroad, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Swahili. Schomburg has been awarded $5,000 and an additional $3,000 for taking critical language courses in Mandarin Chinese.

Students receive assistance in completing all study abroad scholarship applications from the UH Office of International Studies and Programs.
