2014 Apr 30

Khanh Nguyen, a University of Houston (UH) physics and mathematics major who is from Houston, has received the 2014 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Nguyen was among 283 recipients selected from a field of 1,166 candidates nationwide to receive this prestigious scholarship. Nguyen will receive $7,500 to cover her college expenses for the 2014-15 academic year.

Established by Congress in 1986 to honor late Sen. Barry Goldwater, the Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students pursuing careers in mathematics, natural sciences and engineering. It is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields. Nguyen becomes only the seventh UH student in the history of the university to win the award.

Nguyen is currently researching the brain's ability to represent spatial location with her faculty mentor, assistant professor Zachary Kilpatrick in the UH College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. According to Nguyen, the research has implications in many fields, including robotics, neuroscience and technology. Upon graduation, Nguyen plans to pursue a Ph.D. in applied mathematics and continue working in mathematical neuroscience.
